Areas of Assistance

Six legal departments

AMLA is organized into six departments, including a dedicated Immigration Department. This structure helps direct immigration, human rights, family, litigation, business, and property inquiries to members with relevant professional knowledge and experience.

01

Immigration

Family-based immigration, employment and business immigration, asylum, humanitarian protection, citizenship, removal defense, immigration detention, and other U.S. immigration matters.

02

Civil Rights & Human Rights

Domestic civil rights, religious discrimination, international human rights, persecution, refugee protection, and matters that may overlap with immigration or humanitarian relief.

03

Family Law

Wills and estates, divorce, child custody, children’s rights, and family matters that may also affect immigration status or family-based immigration petitions.

04

Litigation

General civil or criminal disputes, court proceedings, dispute resolution, and litigation matters, including cases that may have immigration consequences.

05

Legal Entities

Incorporation, legal status, patents and trademarks, contracts, and business transactions, including entity and investment questions connected to business immigration.

06

Property

Real property, ownership, leasing, housing, land use, and property concerns, including housing issues affecting immigrants, refugees, and their families.

Immigration Assistance

Immigration matters we may help identify

Immigration law can involve strict deadlines, complex procedures, and serious consequences. AMLA may help identify appropriate immigration resources or connect an inquiry with a member familiar with the relevant area, subject to availability and conflict review.

  • Family petitions and adjustment of status
  • Employment and business immigration
  • Investor and extraordinary-ability matters
  • Asylum and humanitarian protection
  • Removal and deportation defense
  • Immigration detention and bond matters
  • Citizenship and naturalization
  • Religious persecution and refugee concerns
  • Immigration consequences of criminal matters
  • Immigration-related civil rights concerns
How It Works

Submitting a legal or immigration inquiry

01

Describe Your Situation

Provide a concise description of the legal or immigration issue, your location, current status, and any known deadline or hearing date.

02

Initial Review

AMLA will review the inquiry to identify the relevant department, including whether the matter should be directed to an immigration professional.

03

Referral or Resources

When appropriate and available, AMLA may direct the inquiry to a member attorney or other legal or immigration resource.

Urgent Immigration Deadlines

Immigration matters may involve short filing deadlines, court hearings, detention, removal orders, requests for evidence, expiring status, or appeal periods. Clearly identify any deadline, hearing, detention, or scheduled government appointment in the intake form.

Submitting an inquiry to AMLA does not extend, suspend, or preserve any legal or immigration deadline. Do not delay seeking independent legal advice while waiting for a response.
